Job Description

JOB SUMMARY:

The Controls & Automation Technician will implement automation strategies to improve process and packaging operations at our Chilton manufacturing facilities. Implementation of new technology, and optimization of existing automation platforms, will ensure continuous improvement across the operations. The successful candidate will also maintain awareness on new and emerging technologies.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Works with outside contractors and vendor/suppliers on installations and implementations.
  • Works with the Engineering, Maintenance, and Information Systems teams to optimize processes, applications, and technologies.
  • Create process review, strategy development, and deployment in alignment with IEC 61131-3 and PLCopen programming standards.
  • Collaboration with the Information Systems Department to ensure data integrity and plant automation network security.
  • Manage accurate system documentation and provide training to both operations and maintenance departments.
  • Manage control system: design, implementation, optimization, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair.
  • Create facility backup strategy & disaster recovery planning for the controls network
  • Will become the subject matter expert on the technologies found within the operations/functional areas and advises/monitors the following:
  • Instrumentation & Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC’s)
  • Stand-alone dedicated Human Machine Interfaces (HMI’s)
  • SCADA (Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition) management
  • Flex & Remote I/O communication & configuration
  • Management of industrial network management including Ethernet and Device net
  • Provide timely response of all automation trouble calls and diagnose and remedy problems ensuring root cause analysis and documentation is completed.
  • Performs start-up and shutdown operations involving the energizing and de-energizing of equipment/Systems.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of equipment and plant operations.
  • Operation of power tools, hand tools, electrical meters, and use of boom lifts will be required.
  • Perform troubleshooting on all electrical problems and diagnose and remedy problems.
  • Manage control system updates in older machinery by collaborating with OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) support.
  • Monitor and work with outside contractors and technical personnel, when required. 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • A degree in Engineering or equivalent technical degree and relevant work experience
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in a similar role in a 24/7 continuous manufacturing environment.
  • Food and Ingredient industry experience is a plus.
  • Systems technology skills and experience in the following areas:
  • Manufacturing systems networks and architectures
  • Manufacturing systems applications
  • Human Machine Interfaces (HIM's)
  • Automation control systems (PLC's)
  • Control Networks
  • Instrumentation experience
  • The ability to analyze data and recognize detrimental trends that could impact the company through increased costs, potential regulatory issues or risk management impact
  • Communication skills, oral and written, for the preparation of professional, clear, concise reports and for presentations to plant leadership teams.
  • Interpersonal, listening and negotiation skills to deal effectively with contractors, suppliers, vendors, peers, team members, superiors, consultants, and other professionals.
  • Judgment skills to balance company, division and department goals and objectives.
  • Ability to build relationships and collaborate to get to the desired outcome
